My cousin asked me to give me a list of my all time favorite top five songs a while back, and I just plain couldn't do it. I narrowed things down to a list of 26 songs that I never get sick of listening to.
With
myclevername's new meme, I share this list with you:
1. Aretha Franklin - The House that Jack BuiltYou've gotta love Aretha. And while Rock Steady makes me groove too, this is absolutely my all time fav Aretha tune. I get a little more oomf in my step when this song comes on.
2. The Beach Boys - I'm Waiting For The DayI know it wasn't all that long ago that I posted just to share this song, 'cause it's friggin' great. Determined is the mood I get in when I hear this song - around 2:30, you think the song's ending and then the drum comes in and says "but I'm not done yet!" - and that's the best part.
3. Blue Rodeo - Hasn't Hit Me YetBlue Rodeo is the sound of my family, late summer evening's spent on my aunt's deck after a day in the pool, patio lanterns ablaze and the air full of smoke. I first saw Blue Rodeo live a few years ago thinking that I wasn't that into them but they'd be fun anyway, and with each song they played I realized just how much I loved them. This was the coolest moment of the show, the whole crowd singing with barely the accompaniment of the band ... then singing along, "out in the middle of lake ontario" as we were right on Lake Ontario. That was my last night living in Toronto and it was a blast.
4. Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds (Live at Luther College) - #41This is my all time favorite DMB song. Just loved it instantly, and this song reminds me of
clumsy_me from going to see DMB together at the Corel Centre in Kanata... standing in the lame-o audience and being asked to sit down and refusing during the half-hour jam session on this song with the band and bela fleck. I think it's the "I'm only this far and only tomorrow leads my way" line that kills me for this song.
5. David Bowie & Queen - Under PressureLove Bowie, love Queen, love this song. I belt it out in my car.
6. Etta James - This Bitter EarthI've said it a thousand times before - if I could sing I'd want to sound like Etta. If I could only listen to Blue Gardenia again for the rest of my life, that wouldn't be so bad. She's fabulous, and catching her live last year was just amazing. Listen to Etta, get her "Gold" double-disc and just... listen to Etta.
7. The Human League - Don't You Want Me BabyI love me some '80s tunes, and this is one of them. This song makes me think of having lunches at a restaurant in Kanata with a friend of mine I don't really speak to anymore, but I still like this song, 'cause even though I suppose things didn't end well I have to admit those were good times. This song always seemed to be on when we went out, and we both dug the '80s tunes, and this is also a great sing-along song.
8. Iron & Wine - Passing AfternoonThis guy just kills me. J'adore. If nostalgia were a song it would sound like this, it's beautiful and wonderful and sad but not depressing.
9. Janet Jackson - Miss You MuchGet up and dance around, sing along with the M-I-S-S You Much ... Rhythm Nation was so fantastic and I'm just waiting for that to show up on iTunes. Have it on cassette, but I no longer have *any way* to play cassettes! WTF!
10. k.d. lang - HallelujahHer voice is just phenomenal. This song is covered by everyone and their dog, but k.d. does it the best - yes, better than Jeff Buckley.
11. Kings of Convenience - Cayman IslandsThis song is Toronto. I discovered Kings of Convenience while I was living there, and it rained frequently, and this is a rainy day song. This song is a book on the couch in my aunt's condo, overlooking Queen West. About halfway through the song is a moment with strings and it's perfect.
If only they could see, if only they had been here
They would understand, how someone could have chosen
To go the length I've gone, to spend just one day riding
Holding on to you, I never thought it would be this clear12. Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving YouThis song is late July, summer heat. This is a song I listen to and just kind of space out..
13. Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)Not only is this song what "cool" sounds like, the lyrics are just .. awesome.
14. Metric - Poster of a GirlI cannot wait to see Metric again for Bluesfest. They were one of my favorite performances from last year, and this song rules. I don't know what to say except every time it comes on I turn it way up.
15. Miles Davis - It Never Entered My MindEven more than the Kings of Convenience track, this is a song that instantly takes me back to Toronto. Not much out there is quite as relaxing as this song. There's something about this song that makes me pause and really
listen.
16. Pearl Jam - Daughter (Live in Ottawa!)Pearl Jam had to be the best show I've seen at the Corel Centre/Scotiabank Place. If you get a chance to catch these guys live, DO IT, because they are phenomenal. This has always been a favorite song of mine, ever since I started listening to Pearl Jam. Pretty sure VS. was the first album I had and this song was an immediate favorite - and I wanted to hear it live, and it was great.
17. Peter Gabriel - In Your EyesI swear I adored this song long before I saw Say Anything. This song makes me feel good, and that's one of the best things about music.
18. Portishead - Glory Box (Live, Roseland NYC)Portishead was just so fucking cool, and such distinct vocals. Some fantastic lyrics again... if I want to turn someone on to Portishead, this is where I'd start.
19. Radiohead - Thinking About YouThis song is high school, but the good parts of high school. Driving in parents' cars for the first time, drinking in someone's basement, having sing alongs in the back yard. Walking around with nothing else to do but talk about how silly things are so important. This song is the things I miss about being a teenager, the way it takes me back.
20. Ray LaMontagne - Hold You In My ArmsThe fabulous
bambiblue turned me onto this guy and this song last summer, and it was a pivotal time in my relationship and just was perfectly suited, so good timing and gorgeous song and this song makes me happy and breaks my heart all at the same time.
21. Rilo Kiley - The Good That Won't Come OutWhen I heard this song the first time it was on CKCU and I remember thinking "this is like Tegan & Sarah, kind of... who IS this!" - and I found out that it was Rilo Kiley and looked into them and just fucking LOVE Rilo Kiley now. Hard to pick a Rilo Kiley song to put onto the list, but I figured my own intro would be the best one. The build up in this song is great.
22. Sarah McLachlan - PossessionEven before I really got into Sarah this was a song that I just loved. She's also someone that is definitely worth going to see live - I'd had tickets the last time she was in Ottawa, but then took a job in Toronto so I was going to have to miss her and was kind of bummed about that. So my aunt surprised me with *great* tickets to see her in Toronto - and if you got her cd that came with the DVD, that would be the show you're watching.
23. Soft Cell - Tainted LoveWell hey, more '80s. Classic, fun, this song makes me think of my soccer ladies.
24. Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry 'Bout A ThingThis song just feels good. Another good one to belt out.
25. The Tragically Hip - Long Time RunningI could've easily also put "Bobcaygeon" on this list, but tried to avoid multiple songs by one artist. It was a tough call. Love the Hip, love 'em live, love even the new stuff. This song reminds me of an old friend... and what better slow-dance song is there!
26. Van Morrison - I'll Be Your Lover TooThis is one of those songs that the moment I heard it for the first time I had to track it down. He's got so many brilliant songs, but there's just something about the simplicity here.
